Sustainability at Moss & Moor
At Moss & Moor, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Since day one, we’ve made conscious choices to inspire positive environmental change. We work closely with like-minded partners and suppliers who share our vision for a greener future. While our journey towards becoming a carbon-neutral business is ongoing, we are committed to reducing our impact and making meaningful progress every step of the way.
Waste Management & Recycling
What we have achieved:
- We recycle and bale our own cardboard, with 16 mill-sized bales processed so far—enough to fill ¼ of a football field!
- General waste is sorted for recycling, and any non-recyclable material is converted into electricity for the National Grid.
- We offer recyclable paper bags at the till, with proceeds donated to charity, and have reduced packaging costs by 50%.
- Many of our suppliers provide plastic-free, sustainable, and recyclable products, with some proudly certified as B-Corp.
- Our restaurant recycles used cooking oil. Our till tops are made from recycled yoghurt pots, and cladding comes from recycled tyres.
- We provide pot recycling stations for customers to drop off unwanted plastic pots.
- So far, we’ve prevented 5.61kg of plastic from reaching landfills, with a target of 50kg by the end of 2025.

Goals we are working towards:
- We’re working towards reducing unnecessary packaging by implementing a buying hierarchy and prioritising eco-friendly products.
Energy & Carbon Footprint
We are working to reduce the amount of energy we use and take steps to reduce our carbon footprint.
What we have achieved:
- Energy-efficient equipment is installed throughout the business, including sensor lights, heating timers, and LED lighting.
- We use local suppliers across our plant centre, gift hall, food hall, and restaurant, which helps reduce supplier miles.
- Over 80% of the plants we sell come from British growers.
- We’ve installed air-source heat pumps to provide heating.
Goals:
- Increase renewable energy usage, particularly solar power.
- Install electric vehicle (EV) charging points.
- Continue sourcing products more locally and reducing reliance on overseas suppliers.
- Aim to become a fully renewable business, producing all energy on-site via solar panels.
Water Usage and Saving
Water is a vital and precious resource and we are working hard to reduce our water usage.
What we have achieved:
- We’ve installed a rainwater harvesting system that collects excess rainwater from our roof to water our plants.
- Capillary matting and trays are used on plant benches to reduce water runoff and waste.
- Our public facilities are equipped with eco-friendly, sensor-operated taps to conserve water. Water-saving toilet cisterns dispense only the necessary amount of water.
- Waterless urinals in our Gents toilets save thousands of litres of water annually.
Goals we are working towards:
- Expand our rainwater harvesting system and continue to install water-saving reservoirs and equipment.
Environmental & Biodiversity
We are working to reduce the impact we have on the environment generally and on wildlife and their habitats as well as creating new environments for wildlife and plants.
What we have achieved:
- Over 97% of our growing media is peat-free, with a goal to offer 100% peat-free media by the end of 2025.
- We planted a 160 sqm wildflower meadow to promote biodiversity and support local wildlife.
- At least 60% of our food and beverage suppliers are local, reducing our carbon footprint and supporting regional businesses.
- We offer organic and chemical-free products, and we’re always seeking greener alternatives. Christmas trees are now baled with string, eliminating plastic wrapping.
- We also offer customers a sapling to plant alongside each cut tree purchased.
Goals:
- By the end of 2025, we aim to stock only 100% peat-free growing media.
