Jobs to do in the garden this MAY!

  • Plant out summer bedding and vegetables plants but protect these plants from any late frosts we may get by using frost fleece.
  • Sow grass seed to repair damaged lawns or to create new lawns.
  • Use a liquid feed on spring bulbs that have finished flowering. This will help with flowering next year.
  • Protect soft fruit plants from birds by using netting around them.
  • Hang pheromone traps on apple and plum trees to control and monitor pests.
  • Protect plants from slugs and snails by using a wildlife friendly deterrent like beer traps or wool pellets.
  • Earth up potatoes, making sure that the green shoots are covered by soil.
  • Install a water butt to capture rainwater before summer arrives.

May Plants of the Month

Plants of the month

Rhododendrons and Azaleas offer a burst of colours in spring. They come in a range of sizes, colours and can be evergreen or deciduous making them ideal for woodland gardens, borders and patio containers. Grow Rhododenrons and Azaleas in acidic soil. They tolerate areas with partial sun but need to remain well watered to encourage healthy growth.

Houseplant of the month

Come in a variety of forms; from the long narrow tendrils of Hoya linearis, the waxy leaves of Hoya australis to heart shaped Hoya kerrii.

They can be utilised as a climbing or trailing plant.

They are sometimes known as Wax Vine because of the appearance of their waxy leaves. Also known as the honey plant because the flowers they produce can drip a sticky honey type nectar.

Light:

They grow best in bright indirect light, morning or late afternoon sun can be tolerated but the strong midday sun will scorch the leaves.

Watering:

Hoyas are succulents so do not overwater them. Water only when the top half of the soil has completely dried out. Let any water drain away so that the roots do not sit in excess water.

Humidity:

These are high humidity loving plants so are great for bathroom or kitchens. Will benefit from being misted occasionally.

Height:

Hoyas are fast growing and in the right conditions can grow trails that are 3m in length.
